4Ground: Midwest Land Art Biennial is a large-scale collaborative initiative taking place across North and South Dakota, Minnesota, and Wisconsin in the summer of 2022. This festival will host 20 site-specific land works that underscore the 10,000-year history of native land art, while highlighting the landscapes and geography of the Upper Midwest, boosting tourism to rural communities, and raising awareness of important land and water issues. This panel seeks to decenter the art historical notion of land art as the practice of white men moving and controlling the earth, rather viewing land art through a feminist indigenous lens as a collaboration with the earth, as being in relationship with the land and water. 4Ground ultimately serves as a fundamental and radical interrogation of place through a rural and Native perspective and through an experimental, collaborative approach to art-making and curating through co-creation and authorship. Panelists include contemporary Dakota artist Marlena Myles whose work celebrates and raises awareness of important native land art sites (many of which have long been destroyed), as well as Arts Midwest to speak about the importance of native representation in rural communities.
