Franconia Sculpture Park is pleased to officially launch 4Ground: Midwest Land Art Biennial on Saturday, June 4, 2022 with a fun, community event. This full-day event at Franconia will include performances, tours, screenings, community workshops, and more featuring many of the 4Ground participating artists and partners. Parking is $5/car; food and beverages will be available for purchase.


Schedule of Events on June 4, 2022

1:00pm-2:00pm – Native Land Blessing & 4Ground Opening Ceremony/Remarks

Join artist Stephanie Lindquist, Ethan Bryson of Natural Urban Forests, and Marylee Jones (Yakama) in their new community gathering space adjacent to Franconia’s artist residency house for a Native Land Blessing and 4Ground opening remarks with community partners.

2:00pm-3:30pm – Scent Poems for Pipeline Plants
Pre-registration (required)

Join Alex Young and Lindsey french for a workshop, scent walks, and nose-tuning exercises to attune participants to the scent signals of plants and other atmospheric materials in our surrounding landscape. After developing a “nose” for the scents surrounding us, participants will compose olfactory “poems” to be later delivered to plants living along the expanse of the Line 3 pipeline.

2:00pm-4:00pm – Community Plantings and Adobe Brick Workshops

Participate in the creative process by assisting in community plantings with Stephanie Lindquist and Natural Urban Forests, or make adobe bricks with Marcela Torres as they create their public work focused on ritual and healing adjacent to Franconia Commons.

2:00pm-4:00pm – FREE Open Artmaking Studios in Franconia Commons

Participants have the option to create “Creatures” inspired by our current exhibition “Brett Douglas Hunter: Devil-May-Care” or create their very own seed bombs.

4:00pm-5:00pm – tour of Land Art at Franconia with 4Ground Curator + Artist “Meet & Greet”

Convene at Franconia Commons for a special tour of all the Land Art at Franconia, including a special “Meet & Greet” with 4Ground participating artists.

5:00pm-6:00pm – sound walk with Dann Disciglio
Pre-registration (required)

Take a Sound Walk with 4Ground artist and 2022 Emerging Artist-in-Residence Dann Disciglio. Pre-registration required, or bring your own portable FM radio and headphones.

6:00pm-6:30pm – musical performance from “Saber” by Carlisle Evans Peck

Composer Carlisle Evans Peck will perform a selection of music from the upcoming, “Saber, MN” by Elle Thoni. “Saber, MN” is an immersive outdoor walking performance about extinction and resilience premiering June 24 & June 25 during 4Ground at The Acreage in Osceola.

6:30pm-8:00pm – Ecosex Walking Tour with Annie Sprinkle, Beth Stephens & Friends
Pre-registration (required)

Follow along with a gang of colorful, fun tour guides in this site-specific exploration, embodied experience and performative walk around Franconia. Your attention will be called to beautiful sights, sumptuous scents, the sounds of nature and tasty treats as you massage the Earth with your feet. The group will develop an ecosexual gaze as it shares environmental concerns and explores possible ways to better love the Earth.

8:00pm-8:30pm - Dann Disciglio music performance

Convene on the back patio of Franconia Commons for a tree root rhizome musical performance.

8:30pm-9:30pm – screening of “Infinite Lawn” by Jody Joyner and music by DJ Yasmeenah

Wind down the evening with a video installation highlighting the ubiquitous and environmentally unsustainable nature of cultivated grass and enjoy music by DJ Yasmeenah.
