Torey Erin, Love Letters to Earth
World Garden Commons at Rabanus Park, 4336-4300 18th Ave S, Fargo, ND 58103
Love Letters to the Earth is a community project in which participants shared experiences of climate grief and wrote letters of devotion to earth on handmade seed paper that was planted to grow a perennial garden on June 2nd, 2022.
Torey Erin was born in the Black Hills (Paha Sapa) of South Dakota and currently resides on the unceded lands of the Dakhota people in present day Minneapolis, Minnesota. She began painting in her early 20's, creating map like landscape abstractions. She later studied at the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities, where her former involvement with painting influenced analog filmmaking, and she focused perception within her sculpture and films. Her background has informed site and time specific works including a Light Study project with a mobile camera obscura and dozens of experimental film portraits of trees, vapor, and abstractions of light to emphasize the curiosity and wonder of the natural world. She has driven projects such as Impermanence I/II, inviting participants across the world to create temporary fragrant sculptures and map them for others to find. Her work aims to engage senses and create an emotional connection to the environment.

Plains Art Museum is located within the sovereign lands of the Wičhíyena and Isáŋyathi of the Očhéthi Šakówiŋ Oyate and Aniibiminani-ziibiwininiwag. The Museum sits at the crossroads of the many gathering places and homes of these vibrant and resilient nations of the Aniibiminani-ziibiwininiwag and Očhéthi Šakówiŋ.
It is especially important to note the Plains Art Museum also sits on the shores of the Wakpa Sha and Kitchi-ziibi, also known as the Red River, a key trade and transportation route for countless original Nations going back several millennia. We honor the Očhéthi Šakówiŋ Oyate and Aniibiminani-ziibiwininiwag and will continue to seek and understand our place within this long tradition of custodial care upon this land and river.
